After determining the focus of the session, the coach uses open-ended questions—and suggestions when deemed helpful—that enables the student to generate ideas and strategies to help them make progress on their goal.
The coach also regularly invites students to consider their needs, values, past / current academic experiences to deepen their self-knowledge; doing so is foundational for students to plan and act with greater self-determination.
Students leaves sessions with a clear and structured plan that they are committed and motivated to execute.
Coaching is an iterative process. Between sessions, the student tries out the plan, and they reflect on what they learned when they see their coach again. Their self-assessment is crucial in shaping the focus of the next session.
